“On this International Day of Families, let us resolve to advance sustainable development by creating a supportive environment where all family members of all ages can realize their potential to contribute to our world.”

The 15th of May every year we celebrate International Day of Families and it just so happened that yesterday was Pentecost in which we equally celebrate the decent of the Holy Spirit of Christ on his disciples….his family that is US on earth.

When the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed as resting upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit . . . (Acts 2.1–4).

The theme for 2016 is Families, Healthy Lives and Sustainable Future. We live in a cruel world where families live isolated lives even though they in the same house, we are sometimes lost in translation.

The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

Communication is a key factor in achieving set goals regarding families and a positive outlook in trying times.

The central goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development focus on ending poverty, promoting shared economic prosperity, social development and people’s well-being while protecting the environment.

Why I mentioned Pentecost is for the simple fact that we a living beings and when filled with the Holy Spirit we are called to ACTION. Starting within our own households, if we love our family we are able to share the love with others.

Families remain at the centre of social life ensuring the well-being of their members, educating and socializing children and youth and caring for young and old.
In particular, family-oriented policies can contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 1 to 5 relating to doing away with poverty and hunger; ensuring healthy lives and promoting of well-being for all ages; ensuring educational opportunities throughout the lifespan and achieving gender equality.

If we all work together we can achieve greatness….WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD because WE ARE FAMILY.
