Count your Blessings…

1ste Sondag na Kersfees
Die woord het vlees geword en het onder ons gewoon – en ons het sy heerlikheid aanskou.  – Joh. 1:14

27 Sondag
Die HERE sé vir Moses: “Wie maak stom of doof? Is dit nie Ek, die HERE, nie?” – Eks. 4:11

Julle het My nie uitverkies nie, maar Ek het julle uitverkies en julle aangestel om vrug to gaan dra – Joh.15:16

Ek sal u goedertierenhede verhef totdat my hart eens breek. U offer ek my dankgebede, solank my tong ‘n woord kan spreek. En is ook eens my mond reeds stom, sug ek nog dankbaar: Heer, ek kom. – 197, 12 W. 106b

Kom ons buig ons kop vir die gebed….

Wie het my geskape soos ek is? Wie het my die gawe van spraak gegee? Wie het my die mag gegee om haat in liefde to omskep? U, my God, het my alles gegee wat ek nodig het om u koninkryk te laat kom in ‘n verontruste wêreld. Amen.

Count your blessings….Happy Birthday.

Star Wars…

What is a Death Star? Who is Darth Vader?…

If in a conversation with a Star Wars fan and these are one of your questions, I’m pretty sure more than just The Force will be awakened. You’ll be punched so hard into a galaxy far far away, you won’t even know who your father is. It will probably feel like you were attacked by clones.

Fear not as there is always New Hope, A Jedi will return before the Empire Strikes back….why not brush up on your Star Wars knowledge before the Revenge of the Sith and enter a Star Wars pub quiz night as The Phantom Menace.

Just remember one thing….

“Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” – Yoda, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Yes there is a dark side and a light side – you have a choice, there is always a choice just like the order in which you watch the movies..

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

…You can watch them in the above order or in the order they came out and a New Order – The Machete Order – Episode IV, V, II, III, VI leaving out the crappy episode I….

“Your eyes can deceive you; Don’t trust them.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Grab some Stormtroopers or go Han Solo and get yourself down to your nearest movie house and watch the New Star Wars movie even if you are not a real fan it is highly entertaining, fast-paced and action packed….everyone likes abit of fantasy with some twist and turns inbetween (if you a real fan you’ll probably see them coming.)

“The Force is strong with this one.” – Darth Vader Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Cool as Ice

Tooot tooooot all aboard the train we going to the Ice Station at Grandwest…

Home to the Cape Storms and mighty Penguins hockey teams but also a place for us to enjoy some social skating in 2h30mins or 3 hour slots.

For a beginner like myself I probably looked like a stranded whale on the ice, hands flying everywhere trying to get my balance and just when I got the hang of it the ring announcer stops everyone saying we should turn around and skate the other way.

Ice skating is great fun, you can do it as a couple or with a group of friends….if you single uh I suggest a couple of test runs before you try and pick up a girl on the ice – the Titanic line “you fall I fall” won’t work buddy I tried it haha.

Once the lights are switched off and the DJ hits the play button the Ice Rink is turned into a cool disco, the experienced skaters weaving in-between the inexperienced trying to focus on their balance. I think you should at least fall once to get over that fear then its on hmmmm think I’m ready to become a figure skater…ladies holla at me if you to be lifted.

Who needs to go to places where there is snow for christmas get down to the Ice Rink for a cool white christmas it is loads of fun for the whole family.

Triple Threat

The day before a public holiday, what better way to spend the afternoon than watching local soccer, rugby and cricket players take to the field in a T20 exhibition match for charity.

The WeChat Newlands Challenge saw Santos take on Ajax Cape Town in a 6 over per side cricket match, this was an opportunity for fans to see their local soccer heroes in a different light – it was the Peoples Team Santos who prevailed over The Urban Warriors hmmmm this might just have increased the intensity in the Cape Derby matches – die Poppe gaan weer dans as hierdie twee spanne op ‘n soccer veld kom.

+- 6000 fans packed into Newlands for the highly anticipated match between the Cape Cobras and the DHL Stormers, the atmosphere was electric as sixes were hit and some miss fielding from both sides but hey the competitiveness from both teams made for an exciting Cricket exhibition match.

True to the name there was a Cobra on the field….or wait it was a ‘Gogga’ – yip Paul Adams entertained the crowd with his moves (not just his bowling), die man kan ‘n wurm doen wat skrik vir niks hahaha the fans loved it.

It was the Stormers who prevailed in a tight finish, with both teams doing a walk around the field after the game signing autographs and taking pictures, the fans definitely got a welcoming treat to the start of an awesome summer series of Cricket ahead.

Witness the Fitness

Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live. Jim Rohn

A throwback to last week Saturday when flipping tractor tyres and lunging with a log was all in a days work.

The guys at Fitcamp organised an obastacle challenge in Crawford, this was all about having fun with a little bit of intensity to make you feel like you had a workout the next day.

The weather was abit gloomy in the morning making me think hmmmm maybe summer bodies are really made in winter but as the day progressed, the Cape Town summer sun shone through bringing the heat. We were split into teams each choosing a name, new friendships formed promoting teamwork.

During the briefing session of what we they planned for the day our stomachs turned when we heard flipping tyres and having to run around the field after each obstacle, I guess strength and cardio were needed to maintain good conditioning….hmmm don’t forget power.

Exercise to stimulate, not to
annihilate. The world wasn’t formed in a day, and neither were we. Set small goals and build upon them. Lee Haney

From lunging with a log, flipping tyres, pulling tyres, up and overs, running with two 15kg sand bags to crawling under a net, by the time we reached the last obstacle it was a cooling relief to go down the victory slide.

Exercise is amazing, from the inside out. I feel so alive and have more energy. Vanessa Hudgens

This was an exciting event, the team were really innovative in the challenges which tested us mentally but mostly physically. A fun-filled day for all fitness levels…in the end we were all winners and felt like one big happy family.

May The Fourth be with you…

Forget 3D, A  new experience is launching today as Africa goes into the Fourth dimension of Cinema…. and guess what the first movie will be…

4DX_cinema example

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS To Launch Multi-Sensory Cinema Experience at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront on Wednesday

Johannesburg, 15 December 2015 – Nu Metro Cinemas has confirmed that the highly anticipated 7th installment in the STAR WARS-saga has been confirmed as the opening title for the first ever 4DX cinema in Africa. It will open its doors to public at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa from tomorrow – Wednesday, 16 December 2015.

South Africans will be able to experience STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in the revolutionary 4DX-format exclusively at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront. This is the only cinema in Africa being able to screen the film in 4DX – giving fans an adrenalin-fueled, multi-sensory, digital 4D movie experience like no other.

Imagine being immersed in a galaxy far far away with all your senses heightened… better duck and dive dodging lightsabers, also watch out for those seat ticklers it might feel like a the hair of a wookie.

4DX_audience reaction.jpg

Nu Metro Cinemas signed an agreement with ACJ 4DPLEX, creator of 4DX earlier this year – the world’s first 4D cinema technology for feature films – a partnership that will for the first time bring 4DX to Africa. 4DX, which uses motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning, scents, and more to provide moviegoers with a truly immersive experience, has been expanding at a fast pace and, with this deal, will be available in 182 auditoriums across 34 countries, with a goal to reach 300 auditoriums by the first half of 2016.

“Nu Metro Cinemas is very excited to open the first ever 4DX cinema for Africa. It is a strategic move, fitting our commitment to supplying customers with a fully immersive cinema experience, utilizing the best, most up-to-date world-class technology,” stated Nitesh Matai, GM for Nu Metro Cinemas. “4DX fulfills those expectations as the new 4D cinemas will involve all five senses for consumers to enjoy a cinema outing like nothing else they’ve seen, heard, or felt before. With the introduction of 4DX, Nu Metro Cinemas now joins an elite group of cinema chains using this technology, and showcasing popular blockbusters in this groundbreaking format.”

“4DX continues to outdeliver non-4D feature film performances around the world, as it expands into new markets, and now to its fifth continent,” said Byung Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “Nu Metro Cinemas has recently been adding new features and expanding its reach, and we look forward to working with them as both companies continue to grow.”

Nu Metro’s Head of Technical was sent to Seoul for 3 weeks to specifically train for certified status to manage the installation of 4DX technology locally. A current cinema at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront is in the final stages of conversion to 4DX. The cinema’s catering, box office and Scene VIP areas have also been renovated and upgraded during this process. Nu Metro The Pavilion in Durban has been earmarked for the 4DX upgrade during the first quarter of 2016, with other sites to follow nationally.

The films screened in 4DX will be in HD/2D and Digital 3D on a silver curved wall-to-wall screen (9,7m wide x 5.2m high). Its audio system has been upgraded to a Dolby CP750 with 7.1 full surround sound. The Barco projector used in the cinema now also uses an upgraded lamp for brighter picture in both 2D and 3D.

“We had to install a complete new steel floor structure to be able to handle the 0.3G-force the unit moves with; as well as water, air and scent lines. The complete system uses 24 computers (1 in each of the 21 seats, motion PC, monitor PC and screen server). The ‘force’ utilises Servo motors and transducers, and not hydraulics, making the movement much smoother and more active. South Africa is in for a total new way of watching movies!” explains Johan van Staden, Nu Metro Cinemas: Head of Technical.

With all these additional features I wonder how it smells on the Deathstar or if there will be dust sprayed in the cinema during those desert scenes hmmm maybe water and bubbles floating too – Get your ticket to experience something different and Awaken the Force within you…

Additional features recently introduced by Nu Metro Cinemas include Scene Xtreme – which features Dolby Atmos/Auro 11.1 sound, RealD’s new PWS screens, world-class digital 3D technology as well as 4K Ultra High Definition projection – and Scene VIP – adding luxurious, recliner seating, a VIP lounge/bar and an à la carte menu to the cinema experience at select locations.

The movie ticket price for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in 4DX at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront is R150 (for a limited period).

           MEDIA RELEASE

“The force is calling to you, just let it in…”

The wait is nearly over… with just a few days to go until the South African release of the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX® 3D on 16 December 2015.

The film releases at Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide – including its IMAX and Cine Prestige theatres – two days before its US release. This seventh installment in the Star Wars TM Saga promises to be an adventure of epic proportions as audiences travel back to a galaxy far, far away!

As Star Wars TM fever grips South Africa, Ster-Kinekor has announced that advance bookings to watch the film in its IMAX® 3D theatres have reached record levels. To date, more than 34 500 tickets have already been purchased to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens at Ster-Kinekor cinemas across South Africa.

Of these pre-sales, more than half the tickets – 18 300 (as at 09 December) – are bookings to watch the film in IMAX® 3D, which offers the most immersive cinematic experience in which to watch this latest film in the Star Wars TM Saga. Come 16 December, Ster-Kinekor estimates that pre-ticket sales across all its cinema offerings – IMAX® 3D, Cine Prestige 3D and in 2D and 3D at all other Ster-Kinekor cinemas – could reach record-breaking levels.

Set 30 years after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, cinema-goers will be able to delve into the events that transpired after the Rebel Alliance triumphed over the evil Galactic Empire over the forest moon of Endor.

Cape Cobras giving back

It’s the season for giving and that is exactly what our local heroes are doing…

Cape Cobras, Woolworths to brighten lives at Red Cross Children’s Hospital

CAPE TOWN. – The Cape Cobras, in conjunction with Woolworths Long Beach Mall and Colosseum stores, are set to visit the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital on Monday 14th December.

For some of these kids together with their parents this is probably a once in a lifetime experience and will definitely put a smile on a few faces.

The visit by one of South Africa’s most dominant domestic cricketing power-houses, is aimed at offering the patients and parents opportunities to interact with the players, mingle with them and speak to some of the most publically adored South African sporting heroes.

Woolworths has sponsored goodie bags which will be handed out by the Cape Cobras.

“This is a very exciting opportunity to the hospital, the staff, the children and their relatives. It also offers the players the opportunity to share gifts, while encouraging and inspiring young patients in the spirit of Christmas,” said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the Cape Cobras.

“We want to be known not only as a cup-winning domestic team, but also as champions of good will.”

David Stephens, executive director of the Children’s Hospital Trust, said: “We have such great expectations of the visit of the Cape Cobras. They are a source of great joy and excitement in the corridors and wards of the hospital with their encouragement, support and infectious spirits.”

“Woolworths is delighted to be part of this heart-warming initiative with the Cape Cobras and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital,” said Andrew Lottering, Woolworths Long Beach Mall foods manager.

‘It is extremely important to Woolworths to contribute to the needs of our children. We wish the children, the parents and the hospital staff an enjoyable time and we salute the Cape Cobras to invest time to make a difference in the lives of young South Africans,” Lottering added.

Visits to the hospital has been part of an annual tradition since the early 2000’s when Paul Adams, the current coach, was still a Cape Cobras and South African stalwart with his unique left-arm wrist spinning style.

“As a Cape Cobras squad, we treasure the visits to the children’s hospital and we trust that this will continue indefinitely,” Adams added.

For those of you who love your cricket do not forget to purchase your ticket to the T20 clash between The Cape Cobras and The DHL Stormers on the 15th December 2015 at Newlands, a great opportunity for the kids seeing that it is school holidays to enjoy the day out.

Dien said cricket inspires young fans, and offer them a healthy lifestyle-opportunity while building camaraderie and social bonds with fellow-players. “We hope this visit will inspire the patients to never surrender their childhood dreams and hopes.”

Snake in a Storm

T20 Cricket with a difference as the DHL Stormers take on the Cape Cobras at PPC Newlands  on the 15th December 2015.

If that doesn’t sound epic enough, the curtain-raiser will be a Cape Town derby between MTN8 Champions The Urban Warriors, Ajax Cape Town vs Santos in a 6-over per side cricket match.

Ek hoop die poppe gaan dans of miskien wys ‘The Peoples Team’ hulle kan ‘n ball spin en ‘n paar sesse slaan.

This Cape-derby has been part of the football tradition in the City of Cape Town for many years, with some truly thrilling encounters. The first-division club recently underlined their steady progress under Zeca Marques with a 2-1 win over Ajax in a friendly match, reignited the significance of Cape Town’s biggest football derby. The match between the Cape Cobras and the DHL Stormers will be a clash between South Africa’s most dominant cricket franchise and the country’s most successful rugby-franchise of the 2015 Super Rugby season.

Be ready to see your favourite local sports heroes in action, gates open at 3pm and the first match between Ajax and Santos starts at 4pm followed by the T20-match at 18:00 between  The Cape Cobras and the DHL Stormers.  Vra maar vir die baas om vroeër huistoe te gaan want die volgende dag is ‘n vakansie dag.

Tickets can be purchased at R40 each and it includes both games. If tickets are bought on Ticketpros using the WeChat Wallet, the purchaser will receive R80 back into the WeChat Wallet! (T&C’s apply). Seating will be unreserved.

“The idea originated with the rugby- and cricket stars as a means to get their friends and family together, but it has since evolved into one of the most richly entertaining T20-events in the country. Now we have also added some of our beloved soccer neighbours and we are confident this will be a knockout-concept with long-term prospects,” said Jasmiena Davids, the Marketing Manager of the Western Cape Cricket.

“There will be a charity element in the game. The player of the match will receive R5000,00, which he can donate to a charity of his preference,” Davids added.

The Cape Cobras won 10 titles the past seven seasons including the coveted Ram Slam T20 Challenge in 2014/2015 and have qualified for the play-off RAM Slam T20 competition Wednesday, 9 December vs the Sunfoil Dolphins, Durban. The Stormers finished at the summit of the South African conference-log in the Super Rugby 2015-edition, the third time in five years. They were beaten finalists in 2010.

“We welcome the opportunity to rub shoulders and spend some fun time on the favourite PPC Newlands turf against the DHL Stormers, who will have some famous Springboks in their ranks,” said Nabeal Dien, Chief Executive Officer of Western Cape Cricket. “Over the course of the next three months, four internationals will be hosted by PPC Newlands, and these duels between the cream of the crop in local soccer, rugby and cricket will offer our die-hard supporters the opportunity to wet their appetite for the clashes against England and Australia,” Dien added.

Mass Extinction

A few months ago I attended the Boat Show at the CTICC and met Davey Du Plessis. I heard he was about to pedal +-6500km across the Atlantic Ocean and it immediately caught my attention, little did I know that this crossing was part of a bigger cause and Davey’s story was one that could inspire many.

Davey’s thirst for adventure is one that spawned from Egypt to South Africa as he cycled over 9000km with a friend. His next expedition took him to the mighty Amazon where he attempted a source to sea adventure, unfortunately this was cut short due to him being shot in the jungle, Choosing To Live is a remarkable true story of adventure and survival in the Amazon Jungle.

The book is both gripping and inspiring highlighting the awesome power of our mind and that there are good people out there even when we feel alone.

I decided to contact Davey and get a little insight into his newest project dedicated towards addressing the current sixth mass extinction period we are living in and highlighting how humans are the first species in known history to be causing a mass extinction.

Below are a couple of questions I posed, through the answers by Davey you’ll get an insight into this humble yet motivated young man who overcame great odds and still has the thirst for adventure.

1. What is your inspiration for doing this expedition?

This entire project is dedicated towards addressing the current sixth mass extinction period we are living in and highlighting how humans are the first species in known history to be causing a mass extinction. It is saddening to know that many species disappear daily due to human impact and humans just don’t care, we are more interested in celebrities and cell phones than the hundreds of species we contribute towards wiping out each year. The ocean crossing is just a platform to promote human induced mass extinction.

2. How long has it took to plan this expedition, and was it easier to find backing after your two previous expeditions?

This adventure took 2.5 years to plan a I did it with no sponsors, besides the moral support of my girlfriend and family. I chose to represent no sponsors for two reasons:
1) Being that businesses are largely responsible for the exploitation of species and nature so endorsing them would be somewhat hypocritical on my part and..
2) So many people give up on their dreams because of lack of finances or support, I couldn’t inspire others if some sponsor just dropped 1 million rand on my lap to fund an adventure, so instead I decided that if I want to authentically encourage people to pursue their own dream I have to do so myself and rely on my own capabilities to ensure I materialise what I set out to do.

3. Are you excited to have your Mom join you on the trip? I am sure she is enthusiastic to be with you.

My mom (Robyn Wolff) asked to join and I thought it would present a great opportunity for her to step far beyond her comfort zone and really push her character, which is why I agreed to have her on board also another factor is that she helps ampilfy the project and essentially the cause of human induced mass extinction, she is able to garner the interest of a wider audience.

4. What are your expectations from this trip?

I look forward to experiencing the forces of the ocean and embracing the vulnerability of being in a tiny boat crossing a big ocean, I also hope that nothing goes wrong that the expedition fails and my greatest hope is that I get to see some magnificent marine life.

5. Any inspiring words or comments you’d like to add?

Despite our separation from nature in cities and suburbs, we cannot afford to forget that we are animals and are dependent on nature, just like all other animals. It is a humbling reminder that life on Earth doesn’t need us, in fact all species thrive when humans are eliminated from the equation, hopefully we will remember that Earth and life is not here to solely provide for our shallow desires and instead we must realize that it is our role to coexist with other species instead of exploiting them as we do now.

As Davey embarks on another adventure of a life-time I’d like to wish him and his mother all of the best, if you would like to track their progress follow the link below:
