Shining Star

image

Today marked the First Advent and the first Sunday of the Moravian Calender Year…the star is shining bright as a symbol that a child will be born who will save us from our sins through compassion and love for each and everyone of us.

New International Version
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
http://biblehub.com/john/3-16.htm

Jesus was born in a crib in Bethlehem, 3 Wise Men followed a star guiding them to the miracle boy Jesus – on them they had gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

In the same way that the Star guided the 3 wise men, God is guiding each and everyone of us to fullfil a purpose that he has planned for us, he has given us each a unique talent or gift and wants us to use this for his work so that when we meet him and he asks what we have done with our lives – we can firmly state with confidence that we let out light shine.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine,
This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel – NO!
I’m gonna let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel – NO!
I’m gonna let it shine,
Hide it under a bushel – NO!
I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine.
Don’t let Satan blow it!
I’m gonna let it shine.
Don’t let Satan blow it out.
I’m gonna let it shine
Don’t let Satan blow it out.
I’m gonna let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Let it shine til Jesus comes.
I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine til Jesus comes.
I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine til Jesus comes.
I’m gonna let it shine.
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine,
This little light of mine, I’m gonna
let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

Columbiana

Hola Jillian

So it has finally become a reality that our youngest cousin will be travelling to Columbia in an exchange programme based on experiencing a different culture and like she put it – getting out of your comfort zone.

Move out of your comfort
zone. You can only grow if
you are willing to feel
awkward and uncomfortable
when you try something
new. – Brian Tracy

Many of us only wish for opportunties like this but now you have it and knowing your personality you earned it, take this and and all the experiences that may come your way and grab it with both hands. Be true to yourself and even though you are in a foreign country the values that your parents and family have bestowed upon you will keep you safe.

I’m continually trying to
make choices that put me
against my own comfort
zone. As long as you’re
uncomfortable, it means
you’re growing. – Ashton Kutcher

This opportunity is the start of many, learn from it be open minded take in the culture, language, food and people use whatever you gain to grow youself but also try and help those around you, leave something of yourself behind as a legacy. Age is but a number use this to your advantage and show how powerful we as South Africans are in accepting and adapting to different cultures in order for future generations to benefit from programmes like this.

Ok enough with the serious talk just enjoy yourself take in as much as you can, take photo’s selfies if you must 😀 – when you come back I wana learn how to Salsa and maybe introduce me to a friend from Columbia Sofía Vergara’s daughter maybe if she has one haha

Ons gaan jou miss maar ons weet jy gaan ons trots maak, but this is not for us this is for YOU

Bon Voyage 😉

Black Friday

So I thought Black Friday had some sort of historical significance but when  my search went to google (as she is my friend when in doubt) I found that it just a day of crazy sales o_O
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)

http://www.theblackfriday.com/what-is-black-friday.shtml

The day after Thanksgiving is the day American’s go crazy queuing for hours in the hopes of being the first in the shop to purchase whatever is on sale this is interesting because if you look at pictures of Thanksgiving celebrations all those food how do they still feel like getting up to go to the shops.

Apparently this craze has hit South Africa too on a somewhat smaller scale though daar issie geld om nog unwanted goods te koep nie soe ek dink nie ons mense gaan by Checkers oornag nie, with the recent electricity woes it might just be called Blackout Friday in some areas o_O

On a positive note the Black Label beers were on sale it all comes together with….o wait wrong beer my bad 😀

Tomorrow it is Grey Saturday when you look at your bank balance but hey we live for today right so lets go shopping as I’m writing this I’m in the line to fight for those beers only 3 per customer – its on hahaha

Design your own life

image

They imagined and now they are sharing, join the CPUT students as they showcase their imagination through design.

image

From Industrial Design to the Extra Curriculum Programme you will see all types of things to catch your eye and maybe even inspire future designers who are thinking of following this path.

image

“We should Design for a better society and not a richer society” -unknown

Im sure every designer in their mind want to contribute to a better society just think about the clothes you are wearing a Fashion Designer thought of that sweater or pants,

image

they imagined it fitting perfectly on your body and im sure it does :-D.

Look around your house it was planned by an Architect the images on the couch were designed by a surface designer,

image

the calender you are looking at counting down the days till Christmas, designed by a graphic designer. The arrangement of your kitchen – planned by an interior designer. This just shows us how important design is in our lives, as almal nou agter ‘n desk gaan sit en werk  and throw the imagination out the window where would society be o_O

“Design is about changing the Negative into a Positive” -unknown

We are all designers of our own lives and we have the power to affect change for the better these students are here to show us their dreams so why not encourage them through support…

image

…to – DREAM BIG and CHANGE THE WORLD through design :-D.

Lights, Camera Action

image

An empty stage this was the setting of a night compared to the likes of the Milan Fashion Week only that what we were about to see are designs from the 3rd year and Btech Students at CPUT.

Support young, up and coming designers before they become famous – my idea of fashion is a shorts, sweater and sloffies but what we saw on stage were out of this world. I don’t think I’d wear some of those things for men in public but hey thats just me, to compliment the designers though I loved the imagination, choice of music and the visual aspect that accompanied each design welldone on the effort and  professionalism.

image

Many of the designs were inspired by futuristic themes from the lunar people to some twilight vampire buzz and models wearing goggles, seeing that we are heading into 2015  which a few years ago we only heard of in movies with flying cars and stuff I guess this is the future o_O

image

To be a model is serious stuff no smiling, you got to be confident, if you feel good and comfortable in the clothes you are wearing strut your stuff the world is your catwalk. I loved the fact that the models were of all sizes I’m a guy that likes a curvy girl, was it just me or was it hot in there? haha 😀

image

Once again great show and all the best to each and every designer make South Africa proud, you already dreamt it now it is time to live that dream 😀

Today was the last game of the Ice Hockey Season an All Star match between the Penguins vs The Storms.

image

This was only my second match I watched so the rules are somewhat confusing but I must say this game is super cool (pun intended) – faced paced action end to end stuff if u blink you might get a puck in the face o_O.
The first half was dominated by the Penguins with the speed and agility of Emperor Penguins in the North Pole but they don’t call this the Cape of Storms for nothing as the score ended 2-2 in the first third, or do you call it a quarter? (wiping the ice off my eyelids).

With the second 20 minutes it was the Penguins who came out guns blazing continuing where they left off in the first 20 minutes, in the 15th minute “most improved player” of the season Michael Witbooi made it 3-3 for The Storms – lekker one Mickey but it ended 4-3 to the Penguins – The goalkeeper of the Storms saved them from an embarrassing scoreline he was on top of his game all night.

After a 15 minute break to get the ice smooth again and check the barriers as these things take the brunt as bodies are pushed against the side – I wonder if they replace them after every game haha.

The 3rd and final 20 minutes was the most exciting it seemed the it was the calm before the Storm with the scoreline 5-5 in the 12th minute through a somewhat controversial goal by the Storms, from my angle it looked like the puck bounced off the bar. The Storms played well to make it an exciting finish but unfortunately it was the Penguins who could dance at the end with a 6-5 scoreline.

Great way to end off a Monday night pity some of the crowd didn’t get to see any fights -this is South Africa we have respect for our fellow athletes welldone to both teams – see you next year.

The Soil

“If you listen with your ear to the ground you might hear the sound”

image

Today was the start of the summer sunset concerts at Kirstenbosch and what better way to kick off summer than by hearing music from the depths of the earth.

This 3 piece acapella group, 2 guy and 1 beautiful lady brought joy in our hearts with their voices and stage presense. It started off slow but once the people got into the music you could feel the ground vibrate  through to THE SOIL. There rendition of Use Somebody by Kings of Leon was amazing there was a point when I heard a whole band on stage all from the mouth of the beatboxer top class act straight out of Soweto. The Cape Town crowd never disappoints once we start dancing there ain’t no stopping us it is contagious you know you are going to join in – it showed in the children that were put on stage to show their moves :-D.

Weather was good, perfect venue and great way to kick off the summer sunsets – All this in one of the most beautiful cities in the world – CAPE TOWN

KinderJoy

“Children make you want to start life over.” ~ Muhammad Ali, American former professional boxer

The life of a child is carefree and happiness, when you see a child playing and smiling it can bring joy to any situation. The mind of a child is precious as it is innocent of the things of this world (debatable but lets say this is true) – Kids should be allowed to explore freely and PLAY outside, run, hop, skip whatever as long as they are smiling and having a good, for a child this does not take much – give them a kinderjoy and they are happy, this goes for me as well haha I guess you can call me Benjamin Button. We are all kids at heart right.

With so many evils in this world we should look after the children they are the future and I think this will be a bright future as they are brought up in a post-apartheid era, yes there is still work to be done but with all the freedom that we have if communicated properly to the youngsters they are able to make decisions that could change the world for the better.

“I brought children into this dark world because it needed the light that only a child can bring.” ~Unknown author

“Grown-ups have a strange way of putting themselves in compartments and groups. They build barriers… of religion, caste, colour, party, nation,
province, language, customs and of.rich and poor. Fortunately, children do not know much about these barriers, which separate. They play and work with each other and it is only when they grow up that they
begin to learn about these barriers from their elders.” – Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of Independent India

I came across an article and it was funny to read some of the facts about kids, I am not a parent but if you look at any child you will notice how true this is…

1.The average age children begin to use a microwave is seven.

2. A 3-year old Boy’s voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant. (No disagreements here!)

3. On an average, a 4-year-old child asks 437 questions a day (An understatement?)

4. For children, watching television alone can act as a natural painkiller (Don’t try!)

5. The kneecaps of children are made of cartilage until the age of 3 years when it ultimately starts to turn into bones. (Scientifically verified!)

6. Those who are of the age of six and under are at the greatest risk of crushing or burning injuries of the hand. (depends!)

Enjoy every moment with your child as these are moments that will become memories one day.

Toilet Humour

image

Yeah that got your attention…this might seem funny but there is a harsh reality out there whereby people are living without proper sanitation – Just think about it your life without a flushing toilet, it would be K@k right (pun intended).

1000 children died per day from
diarrhoeal diseases due to poor
sanitation in 2013. These deaths are preventable.

This is a global problem which  is serious and needs to be addressed, just last year people were throwing feaces at Cape Town Airport and at the steps of the Western Cape Government in a plight to show their anger at the bucket system, I have not heard any follow ups on this story – I’m hoping no news is good news and that a plan was made to manage this situation.

OPEN DEFECATION
The 2015 goal to halve the
proportion of people living without sanitation is running 150 years behind schedule. 1 billion (15 % of the world population) still practice open defecation.

I remember when we were younger we use to laugh at the ‘outhouse’ at my ouma’s place, they still used the bucket system – its was funny at the time but if I look back and read the stats it is sad that people are living in these horrible conditions today – Awareness needs to be raised and action taken, proper sanitation should not be a need it should be seen as a luxury (don’t know if that sounds right but I’m sure you get what I mean) – Flushing toilets and running water should be accessible to all.

EDUCATION/GIRLS
Clean and safe toilets help keep
more girls in school and increase
attendance rates. Far too many girls miss out on education just because of the lack of a clean and safe toilet.

We can spend all the money in the world on education but of what use is this if pupils are absent due to lack of basic human needs.

Lets focus on helping where we can before the shit hits the fan o_O
