“I guarantee that we will play this game like it was the final.” – Thiago Silva.
With their inspirational captain Thiago Silva back in the team after their devastating loss to the Germans in the semi-finals, Brazil had a prove to point and some pride to restore in this 3rd/4th place playoff against an unbeaten Netherlands.
The coach made a few changes with Hulk and Fred out of the starting line up after thier dismal performances in the previous game.
“We want to win here, return unbeaten & with a feeling that we have given everything here.” – Dirk Kuyt.
The Dutch unfortunate in the previous game losing on penalties to Argentina, missing out on a chance to play in the finals, still unbeaten in this years World Cup are looking to complete the tournament with that record intact.
This is the 12th showdown between BRAZIL & NETHERLANDS. Both sides have an even track record of 3 victories apiece plus 5 draws.
It took the Dutch just 3 minutes to take the lead, after Robin van Persie scored from the penalty spot. Some would argue this was not a penalty but Thiago Silva did pull Robben back, it deserved a red card if not for the penalty though.
In the 17th minute a defensive error from Luiz heading the ball straight to Blind who literaly blinded Cesar to increase the lead of the Dutch to 2 goal, the fans brazilian fans were hoping that this was not going to be another 7 goal thriller.
Brazil did have some chances though with Oscar getting a free-kicks within shooting range and some near misses from crosses, but the game ended 2-0 at half-time.
What will Brazil do in the second half? Will we see a comeback to make the home fans smile?
BRAZIL are on their way to losing back-to-back WorldCup matches for the first time since 1974. Is there any way back for them?
With Brazil fighting back in the second half many Brazilian fans would be saying the Algerian referee was unfair to them tonight which I somewhat agree with but it was not to be for them as there was no team spirit with Oscar being the only star player on the night. They were clearly outplayed by the Dutch tonight.
Georginio Wijnaldum sealed it for Louis Van Gaal’s side in the 90th minute to make the final score 3-0 and leave the 2014 World Cup unbeaten but sadly 3rd place.
Full-Time at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha: BRAZIL 0 – 3 NETHERLANDS (van Persie 3’, Blind 17′, Wijnaldum 91′). WorldCup 2014
Just for the record 4th place prize money is a cool $20 million. Brazil v Netherlands. WorldCup2014. 3rd place gets $22 million.
With only $2 million the split between the winnings of the 3rd and 4th place finshes, Who remembers 3rd place anyway…..Brazil will certianly want to forget the last 2 games at this years World Cup.
The focus now switches to the Finals, who will come on tops to claim the 2014 Fifa World Cup GOLD…..Argentina vs Germany.
