How important it is for us to
recognize and celebrate our
heroes and she-roes!
Maya Angelou

Marguerite Ann Johnson ; April4,
1928 – May 28, 2014) was an
American author and poet.

She was a remarkable woman who faced many adversities in the years of black oppression but through her work has the power to inspire many. She showed that it does not matter where you came from or how bad your circumstances are there is always a way out, you just have to believe in yourself.

“To know her life story is to
simultaneously wonder what on
earth you have been doing with your own life and feel glad that you didn’t have to go through half the things she has.” The Gaurdian – Writer, Gary Younge 2009

You will notice the intensity of her circumstances in the poem ‘Still I Rise’ – sad poem but at the same time inspirational.

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise…..

She was active in the Civil Rights movement , and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, both great men in there own right fighting for freedom. You will notice the deeper sense of her fight for freedom in the poem ‘I know why a caged bird sings’ this is also the name of her first autobiography.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom….

They say that people become more famous once they pass away by the legacy they leave behind, I am definitely inspired by the words of Maya Angelou, Yes it is true, words can move you, it is how you react to these words that will reach you to new heights.

anyone’s victim.

You have a choice, do not let abuse rule your life there is better things out there waiting for you…

If you don’t like something,
change it. If you can’t

With that attitude we will make this a better place for all and I think this is what she and many others fought for…we have made progress but it is a constant struggle so…

someone’s cloud.
