Are you Jazz

Who dances in the rain…..yeah thats right its that time of the year again when Cape Town host the 15th International Jazz Festival.

To kick off this awesome festival of soulful Jazz music we are treated to a FREE warm up concert in the iconic greenmarket square. Cape Town people know how to bring the heat, come rain or shine we will shake what our momma’s gave us. The words of our MC for the evening Mr Carl Wastie, “There is no rain when you have Luwayne”, ahhhh this guy is a legend on the Decks getting us pumped up inbetween Live acts  “Wie maak die jol vol, Kaapstad maak die jol vol hoyaaaaaaaaa”

image

What started off as a cool evening, thinking the weather would play along by the end of the evening we were soaked but that did not stop the festive atmosphere.

Who needs a weekend to party…not Cape Town nope here we do it in the week I call it midweek madness, put Live music and beers flowing together, yip I think we going to get our groove on tonight.

image

Cape Town came in there numbers and brought thier dancing shoes too, enjoying the performances on offer and not only locals there were many international people jamming it out too.

We were treated to an aray of talent from Crazy White Boy –  Yes baby I can love you better, Open Mic winner Sadé Ross and Tasha’s World all the way from the Netherlands and to end off the wet evening Shakatak who will be performing at the International Jazz Fest this weekend.

Are you feeling warm yet, well I am after that party, wow thank you to the organisers and cheers to another 15 more festivals to come, to the lucky people who  got there tickets to the SOLD OUT festival this weekend I’m sure you will enjoy every minute.

Lush green grass, water splashing against the pillars ahhh the soothing sounds of the ocean as you wake up in the morning, not that I slept much though, yes I love the ocean but can we get a mute button at night please.

Wake up early and take a jog through the streets, just don’t get lost finding your way back, no this did not happen to me I’ve got a built in GPS in my head….NOOOOT.

Food for thought: Human Rights Day

21 March is Human Rights Day…in South Africa’s rich history and in an Election year I feel it fitting to celebrate the day by remembering the reason behind it. Many of us take these days for granted, yes it is a holiday sleep late but with all the programmes on offer make use of this and educate youself in order to pass on the knowledge to future generations. Education is key, we need to know our past in order to move forward without making the same mistakes.

21 March 1960 a Mass protest which initially started as peaceful turned ugly as 5000 -10 000 people protested around the police station in Sharpville calling for the abandonment of the Pass Law…allowing them the freedom to walk around without having to show a pass document. The police threw teargas and moved in with batons trying to disperse the rowdy crowd, when this failed 40 seconds of gunfire ensued, many were injured and 69 people killed. Like I said before we should learn from the past, in modern day protests there are still people who abuse the power of freedom or there Human Right to protest PEACEFULLY..im not saying I condone what the police had done in 1960 but at the time of the shooting their were 19 000 angry people, in order to learn from this I feel the government should put measures in place to avoid these protests……read more at the following site http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpeville_massacre

Lets move onto something more colourful, 21 March 2014 the Grand Parade was tranformed into a spectacle of colourful powders hundreds of people gathered to enjoy music and interaction with different cultures while throwing each other with colourful powder..WE ARE ONE based on the HOLI One festival in India.

image

In South Africa on public holidays the Museums are free, I visited the Iziko Slave museum being taken back through the history of how people fought for the Emancipation of Slavery..this is a definite eye opener worth the view, take the time and have a visit.

image

“Our interest in freedom is not confined to ourselves only. We are interested in the Liberation of all oppressed people in the whole of Africa and in the World as a whole…” Chief Albert Luthuli.

Walking towards the Company Gardens you see many smiling faces, families, friends all enjoying the summer sun. Inside the garden picnics and people just relaxing with a book in the shade ahhh the beauty of Cape Town. We were once again treated to a day of music because song and dance brings people together.

image

11 years old drummer Daniel Petersen the 3rd, wowed the crowed with his skills on the drums accompanied by his band, He will be SA’s ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund overseas, playing alongside many international artists such as Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake to name but a few.

image

Another crowd favourite was Youngsta bringing the crowd to there feet with some lyrical genius I especially like the part where he freestyled to things people were holding up in the crowd…he has mad skills.

image

To end of the day of celebrating our Human Right to freedom and cultural diversity The soulful voices of The Black Ties got the crowd pumping.

What a wonderful way to spend a public holiday, History, Music and interacting with the many beautiful people of the Mother City, Cape Town.

Jou Ma sé Purse

The candles are lit, the drinks are on the table people are streaming in it is almost time for a night of crazy laughter, this is the setting of my first time at Jou Ma sé Comedy Club.

You could feel the nervous energy in the air as we saw the host for the evenings entertainment walk in…..guess who??? Its the crazy Rob van Vuuren even the waiter warned us telling us we brave for sitting infront not that we had a choice in the matter though. Our plan was to not make direct eye contact and laugh at every joke but not to outlandish…ahh we are old comedy lovers we got this :-D. Luckily for us the nerves settled once Rob found his victims for the night…The 3 beautiful ladies in the front, Colleen from PE and Sven ahhh shame this guy had a hard time what a great sport…..and according to Rob the Coloured Shrek in the corner.

First up we had Ismaail Macdonald all the way from USA….getting lost following a robot ending up in a greasy pumphouse :-D…lol the Ashma joke was real funny get the Fire Truck cos this guy brought the heat.

Did you know Koala bears sleep 20 hours a day and for the other 4 hours they having sex… apparently their heads explode if you speak afrikaans to them hahaha Thank you Rob for that lesson, O yes did I mention Sven got Robs Balls in his face o_O….see why we were nervous.

Next up we had Mr Grey, Devin Grey….haha ima Bond fan too but after his joke I don’t think I want to try that pick up line on a girl….I would probably get a baie fokken p#%& vinnige klap o_O.

O yes and we found out the reason for the malaysian airline getting lost….Robs Dog stole it – Bella is such a cat burglar.

Ladies and gentleman put your hands together for the headliner of the night John Vlismis…damn this guy is funny he just doesn’t care who he offends love it, I love SA comedy you can relate to it in so many ways.

Yooooooohhhhhh what an entertaining evening Thank You to all the comedians and yip yip lets give it up to Kurt Schoonraad the owner love the setting and ofcourse love the Comedy.

Pedal Power

Once again Cape Town hosted the Annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour ….hundreds of cyclist from across Cape Town some even from overseas braved the elements today especially the gruelling wind in an attempt to cross the finish line after cycling 109km across the peninsula.

image

This is probably a massive achievement to accomplish one which I wish to also tick off my  bucket list in the not too distant future….I mean with the staggering increase in the petrol price lately cycling is the way to go right.

image

Cycling through Chapmans Peak ahhh Cape Town is one beautiful City…

image

….just look at that view not that any of the cyclist had time to admire this though, all they had on there mind was focusing on crossing that finish line…determination and stamina is the name of the game. Put your MIND to it and you can ACHIEVE anything.

The oldest man to ever complete the Cape Argus was Japie Malan at 92 years old! – WHAT IS YOUR EXCUSE? – Myself included.

Even more amazing I think seeing that we celebrated International Womens day in the week…

Mary Warner is the oldest woman to complete the Cape Argus. She was 80 in 2006 – that’s one amazing granny!

Wow pure inspiration right there…

image

Welldone to these 3 ladies who crossed the finish line first today.

image

And this was the mens winner…and ofcourse welldone to everyone else who participated you all are WINNERS in your own right.

image

There is even a section for the little ones to get a little exercise which I think is awesome the key to success is to start young 😀

image

Thank you Cape Town and all sponsors for another successful Cycle Tour I’m sure everyone who participated enjoyed it thoroughly WELLDONE

Pedal POWER 😉
